What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy differs from counseling.  Counseling is the giving of advice, direction and connection to resources.  Psychotherapy is a particular way of talking about difficulties that can open up new personal insight leading to fundamental change.  It utilizes specific, evidence- based modalities designed to achieve  specific positive outcomes and have been validated by research.

Psychotherapy Modalities

Some modalities focus on cognitive restructuring, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).  Other modalities focus on emotion regulation such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).  Other modalities focus on Identity Transformation such as Narrative Therapy.  Yet other modalities focus on deep understanding of one's psyche, such as Jungian Analysis, which includes Sandplay Therapy.

The Modalites Used at this Clinic

In my practice, I draw on all of those modalities, with a particular focus on Sandplay Therapy woven with Narrative Therapy.

Resources Available

Therapy can be an amazing life changing experience and greatly enhance one's daily living.  It can lead to deep insights, change and growth.  Here are some resources to assist with accessing this support:

  • Employee Assistance Plans (EAP's);

  • If you are a recipient of Ontario Works, you may qualify for assistance through the District of Muskoka's Employee Assistance Plan;

  •  Other local funds that are designed to assist with specific needs.

  • Psychotherapy Services Are Now Recognized as a Medical Expense
    In 2015 The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognized the cost of  non-reimbursed services provided by Registered Psychotherapists who are a licensed Psychiatrist, Psychologist or medical doctor, as a  medical expense eligible for tax credit.  The CRA website listing  eligible expenses should reflect this change. The tax year of  2016 was the first year that this change applied.

Fees

Fees are $120.00 per session.  A session is 50 minutes of face to face time plus 10 minutes recording and clean up.  Payment is due at the end of a session and can be paid by cheque payable to Lori Davies, cash, or email to contact@loridavies.ca
